Hathras case: Key points of UP's affidavit in SC

NEW DELHI: The

government on Tuesday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, urging the apex court to monitor a CBI probe into the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Hathras.

The state government, in its affidavit, explained in detail the investigation carried out by it in the case so far. It alleged that "vested Interests" are attempting to ascribe motive to derail a fair probe.
The affidavit comes on a day when the top court is scheduled to hear a PIL seeking an investigation into the role of police officials and registration of FIRs against them in connection with the Dalit woman who died a fortnight after being allegedly gang-raped in Hathras district.
The state government's affidavit said a "vicious" campaign was unleashed in social media, TV and print media to defame UP government. "As the matter has caught national attention, it must be probed by a central agency," it said.
The affidavit further stated that the state government has already urged the Centre for a CBI probe into the case. "To bring to an end the vicious false and motivated propaganda by vested interests," the affidavit added.
It said the SC should monitor the CBI investigation into Hatras rape case by keeping the PIL pending before it.
The PIL filed by ex-judicial officer Chandra Bhan Singh had alleged that "callousness and highhandedness" of the state administration and police officials in giving treatment to the victim led to her death and sought a probe by any agency other than affiliated to Uttar Pradesh government.
